Dependable
Gas energy is dependable. There's always plenty of hot water because gas heats water faster than electricity. Even during an electrical power outage, gas consumers enjoy hot showers and hot meals.
Efficient
Gas water heaters are better than ever. Today's high performance gas water heaters have improved insulation around the tank, more efficient burner systems, refined flue baffles and more efficient heat transfer. The result is additional energy-saving efficiency.
Safety
Gas water heaters have built-in safety features. A heat sensitive valve cuts off all gas to the burner should the internal tank temperature approach 210 degrees F. Also, in the event the pilot light goes out, gas flow is shut off automatically.
Environmental
Gas is environmentally friendly because it is clean burning. The synthetic natural gas and propane used in Hawaii are produced form a clean, environmentally sound process.
Styles and Sizes
There's a gas water heater for every household need. They come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit any application and handle any family's lifestyle.
Figuring Out What Size is Best for You
Hot water heaters come in a variety of sizes. To select the appropriate size for your home, estimate the gallons of hot water required during the hour of the day when your family uses the most hot water:
Shower
|
10-15 gallons (3 gallons per minute)
|
| Bath |
15-20 gallons |
| Clothes Washer |
10-12 gallons (warm/cold rinse) |
| Dishwasher |
10-15 gallons |
| Hand Dishwashing |
4 gallons |
| Food Preparation |
5 gallons |
| Shaving |
2 gallons |
| Hand and Face Washing |
2 gallons |
| House Cleaning |
5-12 gallons |
All heaters have an Energy Guide label. Look in the left hand corner of the label for a first-hour rating that matches your family's needs. This rating tells how many gallons of hot water that tank can supply in one hour if it starts with a full tank of hot water. If your water heater is too small, you may run out of hot water; if it's too large, you will waste energy.

New Developments in Gas Technology
The gas industry, largely through efforts of the American Gas Association and the Gas Research Institute, continues to conduct important research to improve the efficiency and technology of modern gas appliances. Today, gas is being used for not only heating water, drying clothes and cooking, but also for power generation, air conditioning, automotive fuels, fireplaces and lighting.
| Energy-Saving Cooking Tips |
| • |
Adjust the flame to fit the pan size. Never extend a gas flame beyond the bottom of the pan; this only wastes heat. |
| • |
Be sure that your pot cover fits well. Good-fitting covers keep pan temperatures more even and hold in heat, odor and steam. |
| • |
When using a gas oven, set timer for the estimated cooking time and open the oven door only when necessary. The oven temperature drops whenever the door is opened. |
| • |
Preheating is usually unnecessary. However, if the manufacturer of your gas oven does recommend preheating, preheat no longer than 10 minutes. Any longer only wastes energy. |
| • |
Turn the oven off as soon as cooking is completed. |
| • |
Use the oven to full capacity whenever possible. Plan meals so several dishes can be cooked in the oven simultaneously. Bake double recipes or cook an entire meal in the oven·meat, potatoes, vegetables, hot bread and dessert. |
