Gas Piping Safety

Your Safety Is Our Priority

The Gas Company is committed to the safe, reliable transportation and delivery of gas, both synthetic natural gas (SNG) and propane (LPG). Gas is used by homes and businesses for many uses, including cooking, drying, hot water heating, air conditioning, and power generation. In many areas of the state gas is transported to homes and business through underground piping.

What We Do To Keep You Safe

Under certain conditions gas is flammable and can potentially be explosive. We add an odorant to our SNG and propane, making it smell like rotten eggs, to aid people in detecting any leaks from our pipelines or gas storage facilities. The Gas Company also has several monitoring, testing, and damage prevention programs in effect that are designed to promote the safe transportation and use of gas.

What You Can Do To Stay Safe

Dig Safely Even minor construction activities such as installing a fence, wall, or mailbox, or landscaping activities such as planting hedges, tilling earth, or installing sprinkler systems, may potentially damage underground gas piping. See the information under Call Before You Dig! to find out the steps you should take for Safe Excavation. Five days before you excavate, call the One Call Center at 1-866-423-7287; provide them with information about your excavation.
