Rates and Tariffs

In August 2017, Hawaii Gas filed an application with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (HPUC) to increase some gas utility rates and to revise certain rate schedules and rules.

On June 27, 2018, Hawaii Gas received an interim decision and order from the HPUC for a statewide revenue increase of approximately $8.9 million, or an 8.4% increase over revenue at present rates.  In addition, the HPUC approved a neighbor island gas utility rate, which will ease the impact of the requested rate change on any individual island or class of customers.

Since our last rate increase in 2009, we have made significant investments in our infrastructure.  This includes measures to diversify our fuel supply, including our first renewable natural gas project at the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant.

These investments in infrastructure are essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the gas products we manufacture and deliver, and to provide the exceptional service that you rely on to support your energy needs.  This rate case decision means you can continue to count on us every day for the clean, efficient gas you rely on in your home or business.

On average, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Molokai utility customers will see a rate increase, while Hawaii Island and Lanai utility customers will see a slight rate decrease.  These new rates are effective as of July 1, 2018, and are reflected in the PDF below titled "Interim Supplement to Tariff Rules and Schedules (Effective 7/1/18)," which is subject to change, per the HPUC's final decision and order.

Only Hawaii Gas utility customers are affected by these new rates.  Non-utility propane tank and bottled customers will not be impacted by this rate change.  To determine what type of customer you are, please check the Service Type listed on your bill.

For residential customers, below is a summary of the rate adjustments:

  • Oahu – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate increase of 14.9%, which will add approximately $7.14 per month to a typical Oahu residential utility bill.
  • Maui – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate increase of 18.5%, which will add approximately $13.09 per month to a typical Maui residential utility bill.
  • Kauai – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate increase of 7.0%, which will add approximately $2.91 per month to a typical Kauai residential utility bill.
  • Hawaii – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate decrease of 3%, which will lower a typical Hawaii Island residential utility bill by approximately $1.93 per month.
  • Molokai – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate increase of 6.5%, which will add approximately $3.88 per month to a typical Molokai residential utility bill.
  • Lanai – The rate adjustment will result in an average residential rate decrease of 5.6%, which will lower a typical Lanai residential utility bill by approximately $3.43 per month.

The revenues collected through this interim rate increase may be subject to refund with interest if, upon a final decision and order, the HPUC approves a lower rate increase.
