Hawaii Gas Increases Propane Storage Statewide

Local gas utility continues infrastructure investment in Hawai'i

Honolulu, HI, June 26, 2013
 - HAWAI'IGAS is nearing completion of a large-scale propane storage expansion on all major Hawaiian Islands. By October, HAWAI'IGAS will increase its statewide propane storage capacity by 540,000 gallons, bringing its total gas energy supply on hand in Hawai'i to more than 30 days. HAWAI'IGAS has been expanding its propane storage since last year as part of its ongoing commitment to its customers to provide a reliable supply. The timeline for the expansion is as follows:

  • O'ahu - 270,000 gallons - Estimated completion in October 2013
  • Hawai'i - 30,000 gallons - Estimated completion in October 2013
  • Kaua'i - 60,000 gallons - Completed in April 2013
  • Maui - 180,000 gallons - Completed in June 2012

"Our increased investment in propane storage facilities and our ability to import bulk propane enables HAWAI'IGAS to mitigate any disruptions in production from the local refineries. Our customers can rest assured that at any given time we have adequate propane supplies in the state, and we have the capabilities to ship in more propane to meet customer demand," said Alicia Moy, president and CEO of HAWAI'IGAS.

HAWAI'IGAS also maintains two propane barges with storage capacities exceeding 420,000 gallons each to transport propane between the islands as needed.

"Ensuring an uninterrupted supply of gas energy for homes and businesses on O'ahu continues to be a primary focus for us here at HAWAI'IGAS," said Ed MacNaughton, general manager on O'ahu. "Furthermore, our ability to move propane between the islands with our barges means our 270,000-gallon expansion on O'ahu is really an investment in energy security for the entire state."

About Propane
Propane is an essential part of Hawai'i's fuel mix, providing the energy needed for cooking, water heating, clothes drying and outdoor lighting at many hotels, restaurants, homes and businesses throughout Hawai'i. Propane is also used to fuel forklifts, fleet vehicles, lawn mowers, generators, refrigerators, irrigation pumps and other gas appliances. Propane is a safe and environmentally friendly fuel that is widely used throughout the United States. Propane is an approved, clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and is one of the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels.

HAWAI'IGAS is Hawai'i's only government-franchised, full-service gas company manufacturing and distributing gas in Hawai'i. The company's market includes Hawai'i's approximately 1.4 million residents and nearly 8 million visitors. HAWAI'IGAS manufactures synthetic natural gas, or SNG, for its utility customers on O'ahu, and distributes liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG (propane), to utility, tank and bottled gas customers throughout the state's six primary islands. HAWAI'IGAS is a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Macquarie Infrastructure Company. For additional information, please visit
