Hawaii Gas names David Uchiyama as vice president of Sales & Marketing
HONOLULU – Hawaii Gas has named David Uchiyama as vice president of Sales & Marketing. He began his new position on Oct. 26 and reports to President & CEO Alicia Moy as a member of her senior executive team. He will be responsible for leading commercial and residential sales and marketing for the company’s 70,000 commercial and residential synthetic natural gas and propane customers statewide.
“We are very excited to have David join Hawaii Gas,” said Moy. “He is well-respected in the business community and brings 37 years of local sales, marketing and branding experience. His last four years at the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority set new records for visitor arrivals and spending. As a seasoned executive with extensive experience with hotels, visitor attractions, airports and ground transportation, he will be an excellent leader for our sales team as we pursue new business development and partnerships in the community.”
Uchiyama was most recently vice president of Brand Management for the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), where he oversaw marketing in the major markets of North America, Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Oceania, Europe, Latin America, and the Hawai‘i Convention Center. He also led tourism route development in collaboration with the Hawai‘i State Department of Transportation Airports Division.
During his tenure at HTA, which began in 2007, he faced some of the industry’s largest challenges and provided HTA with critical leadership that helped bolster the industry.
“I have first-hand experience with the impact of high energy costs on businesses in the islands, and I look forward to helping Hawaii Gas create clean energy solutions that will help our residents and businesses alike,” said Uchiyama.
Prior to joining HTA, Uchiyama was the regional director of Communications for Starwood Hotels & Resorts – Hawai‘i & French Polynesia for 11 years. Before that, he served as director of Special Projects at Paradise Cruises, corporate director of Marketing at Otaka Hotels & Resorts, and vice president of Gray Line Hawai‘i.
Uchiyama has served on a number of boards and committees, including the: Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl Executive Committee of the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation (founding member), Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Hawai‘i Hotels & Lodging Association, Executive Committee for the Grand Slam Club, University of Hawai’i Baseball, Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau Tourism Strategic Planning Committee, Board of Directors of Central YMCA, and the Webco Educational Foundation Fund Raising Committee.
