Hawaii Gas names Aaron Kirk as vice president of Sales & Marketing

HONOLULU – Hawaii Gas, the state’s only regulated gas utility, has hired two new executives with extensive renewable energy experience to lead its Sales & Marketing department effective Feb. 29, 2016.

“Aaron Kirk has been named as vice president of Sales & Marketing and reports to President & CEO Alicia Moy as a member of her senior executive team. He is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of all sales and marketing activities for Hawaii Gas statewide. He leads the sales team in pursuing new business and partnerships in the community."

Kirk most recently served as president of Bonterra Solar, providing leadership and strategy during a growth phase in their commercial business. Kirk is also the former president and chief operating officer of Sunetric, one of Hawaii’s largest solar installation companies, where he provided strategic direction and oversaw more than 140 employees and $60 million in revenue. Prior to Kirk’s appointment to president & COO he performed duties as Sunetric’s director of Sales, where he built one of the top performing sales teams in the U.S. solar industry."

Prior to Sunetric, Kirk was vice president of Sales and Operations for Oceanic Values, Inc., a web-based marketing and advertising company in Honolulu, where he managed a B2B sales team and software development teams. Before that, he served as vice president of Operations for Toreador, LLC, a Tucson, Ariz.-based Internet startup specializing in online advertising. Kirk serves on the board of directors of the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii. He has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Arizona and is a seasoned veteran in both sales and business operations.

Aaron Cates, Director of Sales Strategic Planning and Analysis

Also joining the Hawaii Gas team is Aaron Cates, who has been named to the newly created position of director of Sales Strategic Planning and Analysis. He reports to the vice president of Sales & Marketing and, in collaboration with him, will provide expertise and guidance on Hawaii Gas’ sales initiatives using data analysis and market research.

Cates most recently served as director of Finance at Bonterra Solar and was previously director of Strategy and Analytics at Sunetric, where he identified critical business growth opportunities and developed short- and long-term strategic business goals. Prior to that, he held data and market analyst positions at Chevron Energy Solutions and energy startup Autowatts.

“Research and data are critical to sound decision making in our dynamic energy marketplace,” said Moy. “We created this new data-centric position to further enhance our sales and organizational goals to move forward on collaborative energy solutions with our current and future customers.”

Cates earned an MBA from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Shidler College of Business and a bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Nevada, Reno. He is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and brings a cultural sensitivity and respect for our island heritage, environmental needs and ways of collaboration, while balancing new best practices for cutting edge renewable energy models and sustainability.
