Appliance – Tiki Torches

Tiki torches shall be installed under guidelines established by 2002 National Fire Protection Agency, Standard 54, Section 9.16 for Illuminating Appliances.

A. Unlisted open-flame illuminating appliances installed outdoors shall have clearances from combustible material not less than specified below in the table. The distance from the ground level to the base of the burner shall at least be 7 feet. (NFPA 54, 10.15.2.2).

CLEARANCE FOR UNLISTED OUTDOOR OPEN FLAME APPLIANCES

B. Unlisted open-flame illuminating appliances installed outdoors shall be equipped with a limiting orifice or other limiting devices, which will maintain a flame height consistent with the clearance from combustible material.

C. Underground gas piping shall be installed with a minimum cover of 18 inches for PE pipe and 12 inches for xtc wrapped pipe from finish grade and shall be protected with approved cushion material at least 6 inches above the pipe and at least 4 inches on the side and under the pipe. Approved pipe cushion shall be homogeneous soil, crushed screening (No. 4 sand), or beach sand. Homogeneous soil may not be utilized as cushion material under paved roadway sections.

D. Maintain a minimum of 12 inches vertical and horizontal clearance between gas pipelines and other pipelines, conduits, duct lines, or other facilities unless otherwise specified.

E. Exposed piping for the tiki torches shall be painted with 2 coats of satin black rust inhibitor paint. Exposed sections of corrosion protection tape shall be painted to match. Typical two and three tiki torch clusters are shown to the right for illustration purposes and typical designs found in Appendix I.

F. Tiki torch sizing tables are attached in Appendix I to assist the designer in sizing low-pressure gas piping for tiki torches. For a specified length and pipe size (diameter), the maximum number of tiki torches is given.
