Gas Piping - Gas Piping Material

These recommendations apply to all gas piping on the customer’s side of the meter or tank. Gas piping downstream after the meter is considered customer owned. Since gas piping will form a permanent part of the building, inside and aboveground piping shall be standard weight iron or steel (galvanized or black), malleable iron fittings, or corrugated stainless steel tubing system. Ferrous gas piping installed underground in exterior locations shall be protected from corrosion by approved coatings or primer and wrapping materials. Acceptable piping materials must conform to nationally recognized standards or specifications. Piping materials must not be re-used unless they are cleaned and it is determined that they are adequate for the service intended. Gas Tubing Material

PE pipe to be joined by heat fusion method shall be completed by individuals qualified in the heat fusion method of connecting pipe and fittings. Approved mechanical fittings installed by qualified individuals are also allowed. A number 10 copper tracer wire or other approved materials shall be installed with underground non-metallic gas piping and shall terminate above grade at each end. The tracer wire shall not come in contact with non-metallic piping.

Risers, including prefabricated risers inserted with plastic pipe, shall be metallic and shall be wrapped or coated to a point at least six (6) inches above grade or protected in an approved manner. When a riser connects underground to plastic pipe, the underground horizontal metallic portion of the riser shall extend at least thirty (30) inches before connecting to the plastic pipe by means of an approved transition fitting or adapter or heat fusion. It is recommended that an anodeless riser be used.

PE pipe used underground for customer piping must be of approved polyethylene material buried a minimum of 18 inches and shall not be used inside buildings or aboveground. PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is NOT approved for piping systems.

Approved corrugated stainless steel tubing may be used for the interior gas piping provided that it is part of a system of tubing and fittings that has been tested and listed, for such gas piping system. The installer shall be certified by the manufacturer’s representative. System shall be installed as per manufacturer’s installation instruction. For sizing a CSST system, use the manufacturer’s installation instruction sizing charts. Do not use the standard pipe-sizing chart from this website.
