Gas Piping - Pressure Testing

Before a meter installation can be made, the following shall be completed:

For normal delivery pressures, the piping shall be tested with a minimum air pressure of 10 psig, and to be satisfactory, the lines shall hold this pressure for a minimum of 15 minutes with no pressure drop. Where extensions are made to the existing house piping through which gas is being used, the installer shall make all necessary tests and checks.

For welded piping and piping carrying gas at pressures in excess of fourteen (14) inches water column pressure shall be tested at pressures of 60 psig for a minimum of 30 minutes. The test will be applied by the installer and observed by a building or plumbing official, if required, and a Gas Company representative. Use a one (1) psig increment gauge. When using a 60 psig gauge, do not exceed 60 psig or small amounts of leakage will not show up on the test gauge.

Do not cover underground piping until pressure test and inspection is complete.

If a drop in pressure occurs while gas piping is under air pressure, soap test all appliance connections to locate the leak. The customer or installer must make all necessary repairs and re-test the gas piping. The Gas Company personnel will require that all gas piping be pressure tested by a registered plumber and be free of any gas leaks prior to providing gas service.
