In December 2018, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (HPUC) issued a final decision approving Hawaii Gas' first rate increase in nine years. Under the final decision rates will remain the same as the interim rates effective since July 2018.
The statewide revenue increase of approximately $8.9 million (approximately 8.4% over revenue at present rates) will help pay for investments in fuel diversification projects, system reliability and safety improvements, and the integration of more renewable energy into our operations. The increase is equivalent to approximately 1% per year since Hawaii Gas' last rate increase in 2009, which is lower than the rate of inflation since that time.
On average, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Molokai utility customers will see a rate increase, while Hawaii Island and Lanai utility customers will see a slight rate decrease. These new rates are effective as of February 1, 2019, and are reflected in the final tariff documents below.
Only Hawaii Gas utility customers are affected by these new rates. Non-utility propane tank and bottled customers will not be impacted by this rate change. To determine what type of customer you are, please check the Service Type listed on your bill.
Below is a summary of the average rate adjustment for a typical residential customer:
